Ruth A. Smith's Obituary
Ruth A. "Cookie" Smith, 63, of Pleasant Gap, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Born on October 15, 1948 in Bellefonte, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Grace (Walk) Confer.
Her husband, Glenn E. Smith, whom she married on June 5, 1971, survives at home.
Cookie was employed as a Secretary in the Chemical Engineering Department at Penn State University, retiring in June of 2010 after 23 years of service. In 2008, she received the Outstanding Staff Achievement Award from Penn State - Engineering Alumni Society.
She was a member of the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church, and a past Girl Scout Leader for the Hemlock Girl Scout Council.
Cookie was dedicated to her family, especially her granddaughter, Kendra, who was her shopping partner. She also enjoyed flower gardening, attending the Grange Fair, and especially loved Christmas time. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed by her family and everyone that knew her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Stephanie R. Wagner (Roger) of Milesburg; one son, Steven W. Smith of Pleasant Gap; two sisters, Kimber Lee Davidson (Charles) of Howard, and Victoria Moseri (John) of Bellefonte; two grandchildren, Kendra and Kyle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Thompsanna Lucas.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College.
Funeral Services will be held from the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church, 179 S. Main Street, Pleasant Gap, on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, beginning at 10:30 AM with the Reverend Thomas Osif officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Boggs Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cookie's memory to the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute for Research Purposes, 1 Old Main, University Park, PA 16802.
