Obituary

Sandra C. “Sandy” Herniman, 83, of Lemont, passed away Friday, March 20, 2026, at her home. On May 25, 1968, at the Eisenhower Chapel on the Penn State Campus, Sandy married the love of her life, Owen L. Herniman, Jr., who survives.

Born September 4, 1942, in Bellefonte, she was a daughter of the late William Franklin Cox and Pauline (Smith) Cox.

She was a 1960 graduate of Bellefonte Senior High School. Prior to graduating, she worked for several businesses in Bellefonte including the Plaza and State Theatres, Woodring’s Floral Shop, local bank, and the Bellefonte YMCA. After graduation, she went to work for the Student Loans and Scholarships Office at The Pennsylvania State University; later transferred to Health, Physical Education and Recreation. While there she had the opportunity to work with many coaches and also to travel to Europe for the World Gymnastic Games in Germany. She retired after 33 years of service to the University.

Sandy had a great love of family events and memories; especially later in life enjoyed vacations spent with them in Las Vegas. An ardent fan of both watching and playing sports, she especially enjoyed golf where she was the ladies champion at both Nittany Country Club and Centre Hills Country Club and had a hole-in-one at both Clubs. She was an avid fan of both Penn State Football and Wrestling. She loved dogs, especially Duke and Skip, and related many stores about them to anyone who would listen.

In addition to her beloved husband; surviving are her brother, William F. Cox, Jr. of Florida; sister, Pauline R. Krebs (Thomas) of Bellefonte; sisters-in-law, Karen Ryen (Allen) of Rochester Mills and Nancy Taylor (Richard) of Milesburg; many nieces and nephews; and special “Pals” Debbie and Kevin of Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Cox; sister-in-law, Kay Cox; and her very special grandparents, Nellie and Nevin Smith, in addition to her parents.

Services will be private.
