Sybil Wilson Hutton passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at her Foxdale Village residence in State College. She was 87 years old.

Born on November 20, 1926 in Greer, South Carolina, she was the daughter of S. V. and Marion C. Wilson. Sybil graduated from Winthrop College in 1946 and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Sociology at the University of Kentucky in 1948. It was there in Lexington that she met her husband of 63 years, Robert F. Hutton, who preceded her in death in 2010.

After their wedding, Sybil and Bob lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., where Sybil did clerical work to support her husband's pursuit of his doctorate, and then in Knoxville Tennessee, where their first child was born. In 1954, she and her family moved to State College, where she raised her three sons, did volunteer work in the public school libraries, taught Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church, and worked for many years as a volunteer for the Hospital Auxiliary and served as member of its board. Sybil was also an avid gardener and bridge player.

For the last seventeen years of her life she was a resident at Foxdale Village, where she was an active and beloved member of the community. She worked in the community gift shop, oversaw floral arrangements for the dining room, served on the welcoming committee for new residents, and was an organizer and participant in regular community bridge tables. Sybil leaves behind many friends among her fellow residents and the Foxdale staff, who admired her greatly for her kindness, generosity and friendliness. She, in turn, deeply appreciated the care she received from the staff in her last months of life.

She is survived by her three sons: Wilson and his wife Elizabeth Maturo Hutton, of State College; Gregory and his wife Vera Kochanowsky, of Falls Church, Virginia; and William and his wife Martha Jones, of Williamsburg, Virginia; three grandchildren: Benjamin Hutton, of Falls Church, Virginia; Andrew Hutton, of Springfield, Virginia; and Caitlin Hutton, of State College; a sister, Patricia Wilson, of Raleigh, North Carolina; a brother, S.V. Wilson Jr., of Greenville, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 11:00 am - 12:00 noon in the Foxdale Village auditorium. All are welcome.
