COL. Thomas A. Stoy , 87, formerly of Ashville went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday March 31, 2020, while at home surrounded by his loving family.
Thomas was Born in Ashville, PA on July 1, 1932 the son of the late George and Grace Johnston-Stoy. He was married to Shelby Lightner-Stoy on December 5, 2006. He was the father of 3 sons, Tommy, Tim and Markus. Together Thomas & Shelby share 8 children and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thomas served as an enlisted man and non-commissioned officer in various state side assignments, Korea and Berlin, Germany until 1958 when he attended Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning Georgia. Col. Stoy graduated as a 2 nd Lieutenant Infantry on December 19, 1958.
He had many assignments which included Plt. Leader, Company Commander, Battalion Advisor, Procurement Officer, Brigade Executive Officer, and Inspector General. His assignments have taken him to various state side posts, Korea, Vietnam, berlin, Germany, and Bavaria, Germany.
Thomas Graduated Under the Army Bootstrap Program with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Correction. Lt. Col. Stoys awards include Combat Infantry Badge, Airborne, The Silver Star, Soldiers Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, 4 Purple Hearts, The Meritorious Service Medal, The Air Medal, 2 Army Commendation Medals and 14 other metals and citations. He is also the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, The Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Vietnamese Honor Medal. When he retired Lt. Col. Stoy spent 11 years as a Senior Army Instructor in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps until his final retirement in July 1990.
Lt. Col. Stoy was loved by many and will be remembered for his amazing smile, gentle spirit, his love for traveling and ability to make people laugh.
He shared true compassion and kindness to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
