Walter S. Conrad, 93,of State College, died May 18, 2009, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in College Township.
Born December 22, 1915, in Carlisle, PA, he was the son of the late James Clarence Conrad and Eva M. Tucker Conrad.
He graduated in the Bellefonte High School class of 1934 and was later employed at Whiterock Quarries until October 1942, when he enlisted in the US Navy and was assigned to the 41st Naval Construction Battalion. He served 14 months at Kodiak before returning to the states in April 1944 for a 30 day leave. On April 25, 1944, he married Thelma M. Sones. Thelma passed away on January 21, 2000.
At the end of the leave, the 41st was sent to Guam where he served 14 months and was transferred to the 76th Naval Construction Battalion as a Chief Motor Machinist Mate. He was discharged November 23, 1945, at Bainbridge, Maryland, and returned to employment at Whiterock which was acquired by Martin Marietta. He retired from the company in 1980.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services. There will be a memorial service at the mausoleum chapel of Centre County Memorial Park, at the convenience of the family.
