Dr. Warren H. Smith, 90, of State College, formerly of Marietta, OH, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Fairways of Brookline Village in State College.
Born on August 24, 1921 in White Lake, NY, he was a son of the late Michael Allen and Anna (Barry) Smith.
Dr. Smith graduated from high school in Monticello, NY at age 16; he received a BS from Colgate University, a MS from the University of Illinois, a MS from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from Iowa State University.
Dr. Smith worked for the Office of Naval Research, Washington, D.C., in 1945, then after completing his PhD in 1951, he worked in the field of nuclear physics at Los Alamos, NM, followed by Oak Ridge, TN. Among other projects, he designed the test facility for the jet engines for the Lockheed C5-A for General Electric in Peebles, OH, 1951-59. While at Bendix Corporation, 1959-60, Dr. Smith obtained a patent for a radiation ratemeter.
Dr. Smith is survived by six daughters and their families, Kathryn Joan Jarrett (Marvin) of Clearwater, FL, Elizabeth Dees (Chad) of Perry, FL, Deborah St. Jean of Seminole, FL and her son Christopher St. Jean (Maricela) and his daughter Isabella of Kings Island, GA, Susan Bennett Smith (David Weiss) and their children, Eric, Lauren, and Alison of State College; Priscilla Ramsay (Scott) and their son Alex of Liberty Twp., OH, and Miriam Rollin (Michael) and their daughter Samantha of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Michael A. Smith (Mary) and their children David, Diana, and Mariel of Ilion, NY, and Barry S. Smith and his daughter Paula of Largo, FL; and two former spouses, Glenna B. Smith of State College and Charlene Woodworth Smith of Ashtabula, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Joan M. Smith; a son, Eric Hale Smith; a grandson, Patrick Steven Smith; and a brother, Stephen Smith.
Honoring his wishes, all services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
