Wayne J. Walker left this world to be united with the Lord and his beloved wife, Betty, on the morning of July 2, 2008 at the Valley View Retirement Center in Belleville, Pennsylvania. His life on Earth began on July 15, 1925 in Cedar, Kansas; and he grew up on the farm of his parents, Wayne and Neva Walker, along with his brothers, Virgil and Howard, and his sister, Maxine. As a member of a farm family, he was exempt from service during World War II, but he nevertheless volunteered and served in France with the 517th Parachute Combat Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. When he returned from the war, he attended Kansas State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1951. After graduation, Wayne began his career with ALCOA, where he continued to work until he retired in 1986. In 1952, he met and fell in love with Betty Brackett Hammer, and they were married at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee on September 4, 1953. As a result of Wayne's different assignments with ALCOA, he, Betty, and their family lived at various times in Alcoa, Tennessee; Massena, New York; and Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, where he was working at the time of his retirement. Wayne had a passionate commitment to being the quintessential Good Neighbor, and all who lived in proximity to the Walker family in the various communities they inhabited often found themselves the beneficiaries of the random acts of kindness that he thought to be essential elements of the duty he believed he owed his neighbors. This aspect of his character also formed the foundation for a broader community spirit that led him to distinguish himself as a devoted servant of the communities where he and his family lived. His many activities in service of those communities included his serving as a Deacon and Treasurer of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee; as the Scout Master for Troop 88 of the Boy Scouts of America (also in Maryville) for several years; and as an officer frequently recognized for his extraordinary service in the Kiwanis Club (Alcoa, Tennessee and Massena, New York), the Lion's Club Lower Burrell and Belleville, Pennsylvania), and the Elks Club (Lower Burrell and State College, Pennsylvania). Wayne was also an extraordinary gardener and an avid golfer. Wayne and Betty are survived by their three children, Richard K. Walker, an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona; Rebecca J. Evans, a teacher of French and English in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania; and Susan J. VanKirk, a former Air Force officer and computer expert in Hampton, Virginia.
