William Barton Eighme, 80, of Bellefonte, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Atrium at the Village at Penn State.
He was born March 10, 1930 in Newark, NY, son of the late Charles and Madeline Eighme.
On June 13, 1953 he married Marilyn Joan Ring who preceded him in death on November 25, 2002.
William served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict earning the rank of Corporal.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Buffalo University in Buffalo, NY.
Mr. Eighme started his career as a Human Resources manager for the Singer Corporation working at Commercial Controls and then Friden in Rochester, New York in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1972, Mr. Eighme relocated his family to State College when he transferred to HRB, Singer. Mr. Eighme retired as the Vice President of Human Resources at HRB Systems in 1990 after thirty eight years of service with the Singer Corporation. Mr. Eighme also served as a human resources course instructor in the Penn State College of Business in the 1970's.
He was active with several charitable organizations and served as chair of the Easter Seals campaign and on the board of several annual United Way fund raising drives in the 1970's and 1980's. His memberships included the First Presbyterian Church of Bellefonte; the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 1600, State College; the Wooden Boat Association; the Classic Jaguar Owners Association; and the Adirondack Forty Sixers Club having climbed all forty six peaks.
Among the things he enjoyed most were reading and book collecting, studying military history, restoring wooden boats, restoring antique cars, running, fishing, kayaking, sailing, hiking and camping.
Surviving him are a daughter Lorene M. Eighme and her husband Michael Nusbaum of Pottstown, PA and a son Brent G. Eighme and his wife Elizabeth Goehring of Bellefonte.
Visitation with the family will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College.
